Spring Framework 7.1

When upgrading to Spring Framework 7.1, refer to the Spring Framework 7.1 Release Notes for newly introduced APIs, deprecated APIs, and breaking changes. Spring Framework 7.1 is the release line for Spring Boot 4.2, and the Spring Boot 4.2 upgrade recipe chains this recipe.

The io.arconia.rewrite.spring.framework7.UpgradeSpringFramework_7_1 recipe automates most of the changes introduced in Spring Framework 7.1. It does not apply the Spring Framework 7.0 upgrade, so run that recipe first for projects that are still on 6.x, or let the Spring Boot upgrade recipe do it for you.

The recipe will:

  • Upgrade all org.springframework dependencies to the 7.1.x release line.

  • Raise explicitly declared Jackson dependencies to 3.1.x and HtmlUnit to 5.4.x, matching the new minimum requirements. Versions managed by Spring Boot are left to the Spring Boot upgrade.

  • For Spring Expression:

    • Replace the deprecated SpelParserConfiguration constructors with SpelParserConfiguration.withDefaults() or the builder API, setting each constructor argument through its named builder method. Constructor calls passing an auto-grow flag that is not a literal are left unchanged, since the builder only offers opt-in methods for those flags.

  • For Spring Test:

    • Replace the removed HttpMessageContentConverter with JsonConverterDelegate, collecting converters passed individually to its factory method with List.of(…). The convert(…) and convertViaJson(…) methods have no counterpart on JsonConverterDelegate, so calls to them need to be replaced manually.

  • For Spring Web:

    • Replace the deprecated AllEncompassingFormHttpMessageConverter with the new MultipartHttpMessageConverter, which can both read and write multipart payloads. Neither converter is registered by default anymore in HTTP clients and server applications.

    • Replace the deprecated no-argument constructors of ForwardedHeaderFilter and ForwardedHeaderTransformer with the explicit form that selects the X-Forwarded header family, matching the Spring Boot default. The old constructors accepted both the standard Forwarded header and the X-Forwarded headers and enabled X-Forwarded-Prefix handling. If your proxy sends the standard Forwarded header, pass true instead, and if you rely on the prefix header, enable it separately with setUseForwardedPrefix(true).

Some changes in Spring Framework 7.1 are deliberately not automated. HandlerMappingIntrospector and MatchableHandlerMapping have been removed without a replacement, as they were only intended for Spring Security, which no longer needs them as of Spring Security 7.2. The multi-batch JdbcTemplate.batchUpdate(…) variant is deprecated, so split large batches into several batchUpdate(…) calls yourself if you still need to. RestTemplate and its related types are formally deprecated in favor of RestClient, but still work. DataBinder.setDisallowedFields(…) is deprecated in favor of setAllowedFields(…) or constructor binding, which requires a design decision per binder. Several behaviors also changed, such as JAXB converters no longer being auto-detected for server applications, default limits for WebFlux multipart parsing, server errors now being recorded on HTTP server observations, a timeout of 0 now consistently meaning no timeout across HTTP clients, WebTestClient, MockMvc, and RSocket service proxies, RestClient.Builder.configureMessageConverters(…) requiring an explicit registerDefaults() call to keep the default converters, and the ProblemDetail instance no longer being set from the request path, so review the release notes for behavior changes that may affect your application.

See its entry in the Recipe Catalog for the full list of recipes this upgrade applies, each with its options and a before/after example.

Run the Recipe

You can apply this recipe with any OpenRewrite-compatible tool. The tabs below show three of them: the Arconia CLI, the OpenRewrite Gradle plugin, and the OpenRewrite Maven plugin. See Running Recipes for a comparison of when to pick each one.

  • Arconia CLI

  • Gradle

  • Maven

arconia rewrite run --recipe-name io.arconia.rewrite.spring.framework7.UpgradeSpringFramework_7_1

First, create an init.gradle file in your project root with the following content.

initscript {
    repositories {
        gradlePluginPortal()
    }
    dependencies {
        classpath("org.openrewrite:plugin:latest.release")
    }
}

rootProject {
    plugins.apply(org.openrewrite.gradle.RewritePlugin)
    dependencies {
        rewrite("io.arconia.migrations:rewrite-spring:latest.release")
    }

    // Remove when project repositories are disabled
    afterEvaluate {
        if (repositories.isEmpty()) {
            repositories {
                mavenCentral()
            }
        }
    }

    configurations.named("rewrite") {
        canBeConsumed = false
    }
}

Then, run the following command.

./gradlew rewriteRun \
    --init-script init.gradle \
    --no-parallel \
    -DactiveRecipe=io.arconia.rewrite.spring.framework7.UpgradeSpringFramework_7_1

You can remove the init.gradle file afterwards.

./mvnw -U org.openrewrite.maven:rewrite-maven-plugin:run \
  -Drewrite.recipeArtifactCoordinates=io.arconia.migrations:rewrite-spring:LATEST \
  -Drewrite.activeRecipes=io.arconia.rewrite.spring.framework7.UpgradeSpringFramework_7_1
